Scarborough Castle

Situated on the headland between the North and South Bays, Scarborough Castle holds a magnificent position overlooking the sea. Even before the castle was built, the site was used defensively by prehistoric settlers, and it's easy to see why. It's quite a climb up to the castle from the town, but well worth it for the spectacular views. Most of the castle is now in ruins after bombardment from medieval and civil war armies and the German navy in WW1, but enough remains of the battlements to give a good impression of what it must have been like when it was built in the 1130's. Themed events such as jousting are held in the summer, and children will enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies.
