Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey, one of Britain's best loved attractions, is a gothic ruin set above the town and reached by 199 steps. The abbey makes a magnificent spot to enjoy views of the town and harbour. Explore the Abbey's 2,000 year history in the museum and interactive visitor centre which brings the history of the Abbey to life. Discover the stories of St Hild, the 1,500 year old abbess, through to Dracula's Bram Stoker. The Abbey is said to be haunted by, amongst others, the ghost of a nun who broke her vows by falling for a knight. Her punishment was to be bricked up alive in the dungeon wall, and she is supposed to haunt the stairs to the dungeon.
