Whitby's natural harbour has been a haven for seafarers for many centuries. Captain Cook grew up nearby and lodged as an apprentice with a family of shipowners in the town. The harbours thrive with many fishing boats and pleasure craft. Much of the Upper Harbour has been redeveloped as a marina, but none of its charm has been lost. Protecting the entrance to the harbour, walk out along one of the piers for magnificent views looking back towards Whitby.
